China vs. Western Surgery Costs — A 2026 Comparison

Medical costs in China are consistently 60–85% lower than in the United States and 40–70% lower than in most EU countries. This gap has widened as Western healthcare costs have risen faster than inflation while China's hospital infrastructure has expanded dramatically.

All figures include surgeon fees and hospital stay. Anaesthesia and implants are typically included in Chinese hospital quotes. Travel costs and coordinator fees are additional.

Wait times

In Germany, the Netherlands, and France, patients waiting for elective orthopaedic surgery can expect waits of 6–18 months on public lists. Private care accelerates this but at significant cost.

In China, most procedures can be scheduled within 1–3 weeks of a confirmed diagnosis. Urgent oncology cases are often seen within days.

Why is China cheaper?

Three structural factors explain the cost difference:

1. Surgical volume. Chinese hospitals perform procedures at volumes that European and American centres rarely match. West China Hospital in Chengdu treats more colorectal cancer cases annually than most European countries combined. Volume drives efficiency and skill.

2. Lower infrastructure and labour costs. China's medical salaries, facility costs, and administrative overheads are significantly lower than in OECD countries, even at top-tier teaching hospitals.

3. No insurance intermediary markup. International patients pay the hospital directly at published rates. There is no insurance intermediary adding margin to each transaction.

What you should factor in

Travel costs (return flights, accommodation) typically add €800–€2,500 for a European patient. Even including this, the total remains well below the equivalent out-of-pocket cost in the patient's home country for most procedures.
